Three Shifts in ELA and Literacy:
1. Regular practice with complex text and its academic language
2. Reading, writing, and speaking grounded in evidence from text, both literary and
3. Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction
The purpose of this resource is to provide K-12 educators with a bank of effective, research-based instructional practices that can be used in the classroom to support instruction in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English Language Arts and Literacy in All Subjects. These practices are organized by the CCSS strands at the cluster level.
First and foremost, these instructional practices should be systematically implemented within universal core instruction for all students. In addition, these practices can be used throughout a school’s continuum of supports for students. Educators can identify small groups of or individual students that need additional support in certain strands of the CCSS, and use these instructional practices as a way to meet academic needs. As educators do this, they should continually assess students’ understanding.
